"This year from our collections of rubbish picked up in Croydon, I have found 35-50% of what we pick up is bottles and cans" (2007)

Bayswater Stationeers

"Being close to the Bayswater Hotel we get a lot of bottles and cans in our gardens. I walk through every Sunday morning. It is not unusual to pick up a plastic bag of bottles and cans. These end up in the station dump master"

Ponderoo Bush Retreat

"About time!"

I&M Lehmann Primary Producers

"We clean part of the Western Highway and the Borung Highway. We would like a container deposit system in Victoria as soon as possible".

Bendigo Field Naturalists Club

"We would rather support measures that reduce litter than spend our time cleaning up roadsides under schemes such as Adopt a Highway".

Hamilton Ladies Probus Club

"The vote gave unanimous support for a Container Deposit System in Victoria"

Wimmera Bushwalking Club

"The deposit should be $1 so people really want to get the money back".

Safety Beach Foreshore Committee

"A good move for Victoria!"

……. and District Lions Club

"If it works as well as the SA system then it is a fantastic initiative. It is also another viable means of raising funds for many small clubs and community groups around the state. Our own junior footballers collect the cans at our ground and take them to SA to cash them in so to speak! At 5 cents a can it is worth it. They raised over $850 this year"

Allwood Neighbourhood House Inc

"Should have been done years ago!"

Poowong East Community Association

"We would be pleased to lend our support to this worthy program".

Maryborough Field Naturalists Club

"It should have happened years ago".

"We have strongly supported this action for many years. We wish you success!"

"We all voted this an excellent idea".

Bacchus Marsh & Coimadai Landcare Group

"A great 'Clean Up' initiative".

Friends of Mallacoota

"At the Friends of Mallacoota meeting last Saturday, we voted unanimously to ask you to register our groups name on the list of groups supporting the introduction of a container deposit system for cans and bottles".

Lions Club of Dimboola

"Lions Club of Dimboola conducts a Highway Tidy Program and feels if this idea is adopted drivers would be more likely to refrain from littering highways with empty cans and bottles".

"We collect cans and bottles from the foreshore bushland as we do revegetation work each Sunday morning. We strongly support your initiative and agree with all stated advantages of a deposit system".

Mallacoota Community Association

"I think this is a fantastic idea. I used to collect bottles in my home state of WA when I was young and enjoyed the extra pocket money. Great way to keep the environment free of rubbish".

Toora & District Community Progress Association

"Congratulations on your wonderful effort on behalf of every Australian. Our Association will always be proud and pleased to assist your program in any way we can". Hawkesdale & District Development Action Committee

"Our meeting strongly supports you in this matter and is of the opinion that obtaining a decent refund for various bottles and cans would cut down a significant amount of rubbish and would also have the positive effect of being a potential fundraiser for volunteer groups as well as individuals. A number of us remember when collecting beer bottles was well worth it financially".

Lions Club of Elmore

"Should never have been taken away".

Castlemaine Field Naturalists Club

"Container deposits are long overdue. We appreciate you taking the initiative in this matter. Good luck". Clean Ocean Foundation "Clean ocean Foundation supports this initiative due to its ability to reduce litter in creeks, rivers and oceans".

Edenhope Red Cross

"It is a very good idea. Being close to the S.A. border we already do take our cans across. (personally) The town has a person who collects bottles and cans from peoples nature strips".

Dartmoor Lions Club

"The Dartmoor Lions Club thinks your idea of a container deposit system is a great idea. Although we are in Victoria, we are very close to Mount Gambier South Australia and we have access to a recycle centre and we are able to use the container deposit system".

Friends of Toolern Creek

"I am President of Friends of Toolern Creek. I agree with anything you can do to stop the rubbish ending up in our waterways, inour parks and the stormwater drains. We spend lots of our time picking up rubbish when we could be planting weeding etc. I have a walking group, we always pick bags of rubbish on our walk. Last Monday we picked up 5 bags of plastic, cans etc.

Coleraine Apex Club

"Great idea. We have all said the same thing. Good on you for doing something about it. Good luck".

Dunkeld Progress Association

"Our Association unanimously agreed that this was an excellent proposal. We believe it would substantially reduce litter on roadsides and elsewhere. Well done on your initiative".

"We are definitely in favour of the deposit system you are proposing. If it means that as a Clean Up Australia Day volunteer we won't have to pick up so many discarded drink containers".

Cape Woolamai Coast Action Inc.

"What an excellent idea. Great work folks."

Friends of Campbell's Creek

"We discussed this system at our last general meeting, and unanimously agreed the introduction of such a system would be of great benefit to Victorians and the environment."

Healesville Environmental Watch Inc.

"As active participants in the Clean Up Australia campaign every March, our members are fully aware of the litter problem in this area and the amount of recyclable materials that are left for landfill collections, rather than being utilised by recycling. HEWI is also responsible for the revegetation of our local creek from which we have to clear bottles and cans regularly. We believe a refund system is long over due in Victoria and we urge our local and State government to act immediately to introduce a viable collection similar to the effective operation in South Australia."

Comments from some of the individuals and groups surveyed as part of our 2006 'Community Litter Report'.

"It was only yesterday that I drove along Sheffield road with my son Billy. We picked up 73 cans. I regularly pick up cans at least once a week and I'm disgusted at the sorts of people that dispose of rubbish in their own environment. A South Australian style system will certainly work very well and I'd say the days of Clean Up Australia will become easier". P Proudfoot "I might add I'm a kayaker and I encounter many plastic bottles on my travels, including out into Port Phillip Bay" J Mortimore "We clean up rubbish from Fern Tree Gully Village and believe a deposit system on drink containers is the way to go". B & M Thomson "We regularly clean rubbish from the nature strip on Boronia Road, Boronia between Moroney and Owen Streets. Drink containers are a medium proportion of the total litter. The most common form of drink containers is glass bottles, followed by aluminium cans". K&s Currell "It has been our clubs experience that most of the rubbish collected is mainly coke bottles, glass and plastic ones. Beer cans and stubbies would probably be next. The last 200k of the Calder is worst". Sea Lake Lions Club "Our friends group has been collecting roadside cans for many years and turning them into cash. It's a never ending job" Friends of Chiltern National Park "We have been involved in Clean Up Australia Day for over 10 years and find it an increasingly soul destroying activity (ie cleaning up after other people), particularly drink container litter". Friends of Police Paddocks "There are always a large number of plastic bottles around the train station". Heathmont Stationeers "Beverage containers would be approximately 60% of the refuse recovered by our team in Wonthaggi. Stubbies and cans would constitute the large percentage". Wonthaggi Rotary Club
