PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR LITTER REFORM.
Public support is essential if any change in litter policy is to be successfully
implemented and have a marked effect on the amount of litter. We have
found that public support for CDL is high and goes across age groups,
occupations and where people live. For many, this support goes back to
when kids got refunds on glass soft drink bottles. People see CDL as a
practical, common sense approach that works. If government wants to fix
this problem they need a system which the community will support.
Further evidence that CDL would attract substantial public support in
Victoria can be found in both South Australia and Western Australia. Two
surveys have been conducted in South Australia showing that their system
has a public approval rating of nearly 80%. Also a newspoll was conducted
in WA in June 2006 which found that 94% of the population supported WA's
intention to introduce deposits on containers.
